10th anniversary of UK’s first Earthship

Ten years ago this summer Sustainable Communities Initiatives proudly opened the Earthship Fife Visitor Centre at Kinghorn Loch to an audience of over a thousand, from near and far. Doesn’t time fly!

SCI warmly invites you to come and share in the fun and celebration on  June 14th on the shores of the Loch. The Birthday Event is on 2pm – 6pm on Saturday 14th June and promises to have something for everyone. There will be children’s workshops, drumming, live entertainment, family storytelling tours, displays, food and refreshment stalls, and an eco building tent with guest speakers.

Come and hear about the Earthships spawned from this first one in Scotland, or listen to the traditional mud building experts. No need to book just come along on the day. Earthship10

Sustainable Communities Initiatives’s creative workshop is a part of Fife Science Festival’s programme!

After 12 years of ever-evolving creative ideas at SCI (Sustainable Communities Initiatives) we have launched a new book, ‘Plastics are (still) Fantastic’. It is full of great ideas of things to make with your family and friends, with the help of easy-to-follow instructions. During the workshop, we will guide you step-by-step through DIY techniques. Come and enjoy turning plastic drinks bottles into flowers, windmills, bird-feeders, spiders, rockets and much more. It’s fun and creative, and it’s free.

About the venue

The Earthship Fife Visitor Centre is a fully autonomous, self-sustaining building and the first and only in Scotland. It is a highly energy efficient building made from natural and recycled materials – mostly tyres filled with earth, aluminium cans and bottles. Come and see how it works, take a tour and do our close-up quiz for children!

2014 is the 10th anniversary of the Earthship Fife Visitor Centre and we have lots of events planned. The 23rd March will mark the re-opening of the Earthship to visitors. Keep an eye on the website for further information about our anniversary and for opening times: http://www.sci-scotland.org.uk.

Eco Village – update

The planning application for the eco-village on the Widows Land site was submitted to Fife council by SCI in July 2012 and after a considerable delay of 14 months, a decision was eventually made to reject the application in Sept 2013.

SCI took time to examine the reasons and discovered there were in fact a lot of positive comments about the project, and most of the criteria that the planners were looking for had been met. However there were a few aspects of the application that needed more attention, some because of the challenging nature of the site, and some relating to the planners’ wish to have a project that was more visually inspiring, fitting into the landscape and being an exemplar of new sustainable building methods.

It had already been a long process and SCI had to think about how to proceed. Resubmitting the plans would inevitably take time and money. Although SCI felt confident that a successful application can be made, they have had to take the difficult decision to put the eco-village project on hold for the time being.

SCI is a small charity and there is a danger of over-stretching the organisation, and taking on too many projects at once. The resources SCI has, and for a small organisation they are impressive, will be better used in 2014 on a celebratory programme to mark the 10th anniversary of the Earthship Fife Visitor Centre at Kinghorn Loch.

SCI has planned a host of activities, events and gatherings at the Earthship in the coming year, so please keep your eyes open for further news and details of what promises to be an excellent year of sustainable community inititatves.

All the committee, staff and volunteers at SCI and the Earthship  would like to extend a warm thank you to all those who helped, commented on, supported and added momentum to our efforts with the ecovillage over the past 2 years. Although we are disappointed that the eco-village project has to be put on the back burner for the time being, we would like to express our sincere thanks to all who were involved with us on our journey. We would also like to let you know that the work was not wasted, we have gained knowledge and skills, and importantly local enthusiasm for the project.  We will rely on all of these when the project starts up again and we can tackle it with renewed vigour.

The Festival memories

A big thank you to all who attended Music and Storytelling Festival last month. It was great to meet you and enjoy a day out together.

We listened to fascinating stories revealed to us by Ken Johnston, Sylvia Troon, Sheila Kinninmonth, Alette Willis and our own Paula Cowie.

Soothing tunes were coming from Caro Bridges and the River’s instruments and throats. There were good vibes, warm soup from Fife Diet and kids ruling the grounds. And yes – it was a sunny day. What a good time we had!

Tell your friends and see you next time.

Interesting fact: Scotland throws away 566,000 tonnes of food and drink from our homes every year and most of this could have been eaten. This waste of good food costs £430 a year for the average household. Source: http://scotland.lovefoodhatewaste.com

Priorsford Primary loves upcycling…

…and we love the School! They asked Richard – plastic bottles constructions designer, to build one in Peebles, so that kids could assist on the site and learn, too. There you go! Last Wednesday pupils were preparing bottles to be fit into the walls by cutting off the bottoms. There were some volunteers, too and team spirit helped to overcome unpleasant weather conditions and complete the greenhouse. It now shines on a playground, absorbing light and is ready to use for growing plants, as a shelter or a play room.

Fancy building your own plastic shelter? SCI can help you, offering different packages:

– full supervision and build with SCI

– SCI builds the frame and provides training & supervision to self build with bottles

– self build using “Plastics are Fantastic” booklet & SCI consultation (SCI spends two days on site at crucial construction points).

More about waste education package can be found here: http://www.sci-scotland.org.uk/bottle.shtml

Prefer being your own boss and work alone in your backyard? Why not go through Plastics are Fantastic booklet for tips and photos to help you start. Earthship shop is so close! It’s here: http://www.sci-scotland.org.uk/shop.shtml

There will be stories to hear and people to meet.
